GRAYSLAKE -- State Sen. Michael Bond, D-Grayslake, has decided not to run for Congress in the 10th District and will instead seek to retain his Senate seat, setting up a contest next fall with Lake County Board Chairwoman Suzi Schmidt.
"While I am grateful for the encouragement I have received to run for Congress, I feel an obligation to continue working to address the enormous challenges our state is confronting," Bond said Friday.

"We need to tackle our budget crisis, renew our economy and continue cleaning up Illinois government," the freshman lawmaker said. "Now more than ever, the hard-working taxpayers I represent need an advocate in Springfield who will stand up for their interests, promote fiscal responsibility while opposing an income tax increase, and demand the kind of ethical government they deserve."
Schmidt, a Lake Villa Republican, who has served 21 years on the County Board, was quick to respond to Bond's return to the state Senate race.
"I welcome Sen. Bond back to the 31st Senate District and look forward to a vigorous debate with him on the direction of Illinois and the best way to improve the quality of life in our communities," she said.
Bond was elected in 2006 with endorsement by Republican Adeline Geo-Karis of Zion after she lost the Republican primary to Warren Township Supervisor Sue Simpson.
